For years this area was difficult to  mow. The crabapple and apple tree branches would whack you in the head and the tree trunks were difficult to mow around. Because of all the shade, the grass did not grow nicely. Still, it took me years to convince my husband that a large border with seating would be an improvement. As with many husbands, mine is partial to grass and I have to fight diligently to remove any of it! After years of logical evaluation (he called it nagging), he gave in and I grabbed a shovel.

It is now a wonderful area to get out of the hot sun.  I removed many limbs from the pine trees behind to let in more light. We added the glider this year. I often sit here and read a book, or just sipa cup of coffee and relax. It is planted with mostly hosta & ajuga, which are not filling in as quickly as I expected. It is a very difficult area to grow anything in due to the tree roots and lack of moisture.  Even so, I think it looks better than it did.
